Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.
How can a film get 6% on Rotten Tomatoes and 99% with audiences? Christian and Ed discuss the massive disconnect around the new documentary Melania, which is breaking revenue records at the box office while breaking the minds of critics. Neither of us has yet seen the film, and we wonder why at least one critic scored the film without doing so either. That leads into a discussion of integrity in film reviews and opinion journalism more broadly.
We also again discuss "bad cinema," how it differs from "failed cinema" ... and why it often overlaps anyway. Ed gets in defenses of Dragonslayer and especially Dogfight, with the latter relating to the superficiality of film criticism. Later, we discuss the CNN freak-out over Scott Jennings and his use of the term "illegal alien," and why euphemisms distort the culture as well as the conversation.
