Angel Studios read the room and the country.
The new movie house, along with Wonder Project, partnered to release "Young Washington" on July 3. Coincidence? Of course not. It helps that the film, essentially George Washington's origin story, is an absolute treat.
The timing is perfect for the oh, so obvious reason. It's the nation's birthday, and a major one at that. The grand American experiment began 250 years ago, and it makes sense for a film studio to honor the milestone with a historical epic dripping with patriotism.
Except, for the most part, Hollywood has decided to take a knee rather than honor the moment.
How... predictable.
The industry might have behaved much differently had Kamala Harris managed to win the 2024 presidential election. Instead, with President Donald Trump in office, whatever patriotism remains in the Democratic party now requires a microscope to see.

Hollywood isn't completely ignoring the milestone, to be fair. Two separate projects take a long, hard look at the nation. The takeaway?
Kill the Electoral College.
First up is "Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness" on HBO Max.
The comedy series, from creator Larry David, takes a trip through American history through the comic maestro's warped lens. That sounds promising on paper, except the Indiewire review describes it as "really, really bad," playing off an old "Curb Your Enthusiasm" riff.
The saving grace? The show hates America (phew!) and especially the Electoral College.
Also, for as thrilling as his creative logic and observations can be, there’s a pleasing familiarity to seeing him throw a s***-fit over the inanity of the Electoral College or flee from every battle he’s expected to face. We’re all Larry on some level — overwhelmed with righteous indignation, exasperated by our fellow man’s inability to recognize our rightness, and desperate to survive, no matter the embarrassment.
Happy Birthday, America ... from liberal Larry! Oh, and the series also taunts President Donald Trump for good measure.
Unexpectedly!
If that's not enough, there's Netflix's new docuseries "The American Experiment." The show, to its credit, lines up a number of voices on both sides of the aisle, including Sen. Ted Cruz and Hillary Clinton.
The latter gets to weigh in on the Electoral College. Spoiler alert: She's not a fan.
Nor, apparently, is the series.
The Netflix production lets Clinton rail against the government function, created to ensure that urban centers didn't dominate the political landscape. Why would any documentary enlist Clinton to weigh in on the Electoral College, knowing how unhinged she's become in her later years and her personal animus against it?
Because ... the series is on her side, most likely.
The Hollywood Reporter review of the series suggests the show ends with a "shrug," as if the Democrat given the last word feels defeated under you-know-who.
What a way to honor the nation's birthday.
