Why This New Streaming Service Could Be Different

The looming Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger means two major streaming platforms may soon become one.

Paramount+ ... meet HBO Max. You may now kiss the bride.

It's just one of many dominoes likely to fall post-merger. Another new streaming service is definitely on the way, and this one offers two distinct advantages.

JustWatch.com is a great resource for movie lovers and general consumers alike. Punch in a movie or TV title, and the site tells you where you can stream the title in question. Free? Pay-per-view? Price? JustWatch.com has the answers.

Except in some cases you won't like what you find. If you're eager to rewatch Rob Lowe's 1980s hockey movie "Youngblood," for example, JustWatch.com says you're out of luck. It's not currently streaming anywhere.

Even worse? Director Rob Reiner's "The Sure Thing," a bona fide sleeper starring John Cusack, falls in the same category. Ugh.

Maybe JustWatch TV will fix that.

The new streaming channel, set to debut next month in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and several other countries, will be available directly inside the JustWatch app and the JustWatch.com web site.

The announcement suggests some serious eye-rolling. Don't we have enough streaming services already? Just Watch TV offers two potential upsides.

Like Tubi and Pluto TV, the new service is free via ad support AKA commercials. Similar streaming alternatives are doing boffo business of late. Late last year, Tubi was out-performing both Peacock and HBO Max in the mad dash for eyeballs, according to CNBC. If you've ever sampled Tubi, the service provides a glorious amount of content, from top-flight movies to '80s sitcom dreck you wish had never existed.

Either way, the amount of free content is impressive. Plus, even the elite streaming platforms are having some growing pains.

The news surrounding Netflix this week hasn't been good. The streaming giant hasn't had a breakout show a la "Stranger Things" in a while, and YouTube is stealing its customers. The company's stock price has taken a nasty hit.

At the same time, Variety has dubbed the streaming landscape's cost structure as "Streamflation." That's both cute and accurate.

The average price of ad-free streaming services increased 54% from 2021 to 2025, according to research firm Forrester.

Apple TV's price tag has ballooned 50 percent in just two years. That's a problem. Free services like Tubi, Roku TV and Pluto TV offer a solution, of sorts. Now, Just Watch TV is entering the chat.

Just Watch TV has an interesting trick up its sleeve. Data.

JustWatch.com reportedly helps more than 50 million monthly users seek out what they want to stream across multiple platforms. That kind of information matters. The company says it’ll use that “unique demand intelligence” to create a content catalog that speaks to consumer interest.

Will that make all the difference, or will it get lost in the streaming shuffle? Don't touch that dial ...er, Roku remote.
