Of all the fractures in the MAGA movement, none has been so potentially damaging as the one between Elon Musk and Donald Trump.
Both are powerful figures, and as we saw during the presidential campaign and the initial months of the Trump administration, when they work together, they can accomplish great things.
Both men inspire great loyalty and admiration, if for different reasons. Musk has a unique ability to subvert the laws of physics to do what seems impossible, and Trump has the same skill when it comes to politics. They share, in different ways, what was said of Steve Jobs: they have a reality distortion field--they expand the realm of the possible.
Unfortunately, two such men can't easily coexist in the same space. One of the essential tools required to reshape reality to your will is self-confidence with the intensity of a black hole. Put two such men together, and you have an immovable object and an unstoppable force when they collide. A split was inevitable.
The big split came over the Big Beautiful Bill. Elon believes that the debt and deficit are an existential threat, and Trump's BBB expanded the deficit by a whopping amount, at least if you use the Congressional Budget Office's methodology.
The split was, as you would expect, a titanic explosion. Elon took to X to attack Trump, vowed to create a new political party (an idea that he has, thankfully, seemed to drop), and then seemed to step back from US politics.
Charlie Kirk has brought them back together.

Charlie, too, has proven to be a world-changer. I admit that, as a late Boomer/early Gen X-aged guy, I didn't realize just how large Charlie's impact had been on the country and the world. I knew he was big, and once I started paying attention to him, I was impressed by him in a way that I am less so by some others of his generation, but I would not have predicted the outpouring of grief we have seen.
Charlie was an evangelist, and unlike most political figures, genuinely wanted not only to win political battles, but also converts. He was an evangelist.

If Trump's and Musk's superpowers are the ability to bend reality into submission, Charlie's turned out to be the ability to draw opposites together, or at least provide semi-neutral ground upon which they could meet.

"I actually think they are going to reconcile at some point because, deep down, they both want the same thing.....Both of these men deserve great credit for their contributions to help save civilization."

Charlie was a powerful force while he was alive, but he is a transformative force as a martyr. He was well aware that he placed himself in danger every time he went out, although he didn't seem to dwell on that too much. His faith in God was unwavering, and he clearly saw his primary mission as spreading the Gospel, and his political mission as downstream from that.

Well, he certainly accomplished the first and seems to have given impetus to the latter. Bringing Trump and Musk back together is a modest achievement compared to the spiritual and political awakening that has accompanied his martyrdom, but it is a powerful legacy nonetheless.
