The modern left is and always has been driven by a feeling of deep resentment among its clients, and a lust for power among its "leaders."
Politicians and "thought leaders" stir up and use anger and resentment to lead a mob, fellow travelers such as AWFLs gain social standing and some power through performances for the crowds, and of course, the "victims" of oppression who are whipped up into a frenzy use their "victimhood" as a cudgel to destroy those for whom their hate burns brightest.
No "victim" can ever admit that they are doing well, because they are doing well solely because they are seen as "victims."
Which gets us to this:

Yes, yes. I know that Joy Reid is an easy target, but she is an easy target precisely because she is the perfect example of an otherwise quite ordinary or even sub-par achiever who has gone far and gotten wealthy solely based on her identity as a deeply oppressed person.
Reid is not, as you might assume, even a descendant of African Americans whose lineage goes back to the days of slavery. She literally has no claim to that long-ago history of oppression. Her parents immigrated to America for a better life, and got one. Joy got into Harvard, which is the statistical equivalent of winning the lottery. And she did so solely based, as she herself admits, on her status as a member of the melanin-enriched class.

Since that time, she enjoyed a meteoric rise to fame and wealth fueled by her ability to whine endlessly about how oppressed she is.
Would that we all were so oppressed. It appears to be good business.
Unlike many people in her category, such as the Race2Dinner folks, Reid is actually not a grifter. All indications are that she quite seriously believes all the ridiculous things she spouts, and does so because she is both stupid and brainwashed. There are plenty of mid- to highly intelligent grievance mongers who figured out how to grift off the cultural guilt of liberals and centrists, such as Jesse Jackson and Reverend Al.
They perform grievance, and get paid handsomely for it, either because their marks are scared of being accused of racism, or feel guilty about being so. They are selling indulgences to sinners, as it were.

But not Reid. She seems to believe this tripe. A woman who got paid $3 million a year to whinge about racism claims that America provides no opportunities to minorities. She is dumb enough to believe that fascism is about making government small and ineffectual, which shows how good an education Harvard gives these days.
You can't make this up. It is the sort of thing that belongs in a Mel Brooks movie, although you can't make anything funny about race these days. Imagine making Blazing Saddles, or perhaps Airplane! today:
It couldn't be done, and that is such a cultural loss.
Reid, at least, is currently out of a job because her ratings sucked eggs. The market for her version of racial grievance was never as good as she thought, and in the era of King Donald II, it has almost dried up entirely.
Reid, of course, blames racism.
