A Minor Sign of Hope in Minneapolis?

There is something bizarre about the fact that the reelection of Jacob Frey is a cause for celebration.

Frey was first elected Mayor of Minneapolis in 2018 and is pretty far left by normal standards. But he is left in ways that are also pretty normal by modern American standards. He is big into multiculturalism, alphabet ideology, and every leftist social cause you can think of.

In other words, not a guy you would expect any Republican to vote for.

Yet, pretty much every single Republican voted for him, and lots of moderate Democrats did as well. And we are thrilled that he won his reelection.

For those of you who don't follow Dustin (hint: you should), he is a Minnesota conservative who has been gaining a national reputation for his sharp takes on Minnesota and national politics. When he and many others are celebrating the victory of a hyper-liberal mayor of Minneapolis, you have to wonder why.

The answer is simple: Omar Fateh, the Democratic Socialists of America candidate who pledged his allegiance to Somalia over America, and who said his top priority was protecting illegal immigrants from deportation.

Fateh is not a liberal. He is a communist who has said that he hates white people and suggests that many of us are terrorists.

Jacob Frey is not anti-Somali; he has campaigned vigorously in the Somali community, learned the language, released an ad in Somali, and caters to the Somali "community" every chance he gets. Not that it helped. The election map shows that his vote totals correspond almost exactly to where Somalis (and lots of illegal aliens) are concentrated and where they are not. In the election map published by our local paper, The Star Tribune, the geographic divide in voting patterns was stark

Immigrants predominantly inhabit the green areas, while the orange and red areas are not. The darkest region corresponds mainly to the "liberal lakes" area, with lots of wealthy liberals. The green area is where the George Floyd riots were most prominent. The darkest area is informally referred to as "Little Mogadishu."

The vote totals were close, and in our ranked choice voting system, Frey had to win in the second round, but he pulled it out.

Fateh was nicknamed the Somali Mamdani, and he made lots of promises similar to those of the New York City socialist. What he did not have was the political skills of Mamdani, who is indisputably charming, as long as you ignore the content of his message. Mamdani was upbeat, while Fateh was angry and showed it. Mamdani was also clearly more friendly to alphabet ideology, and although Fateh was smart to avoid outright hostility to the Queer agenda, he clearly didn't embrace it with the cheerful vigor seen in Mamdani.

Frey is hardly a political dynamo himself, but he was acceptable to the establishment in a way that Fateh was not. Some of that has to do with the experience people in Minneapolis have had with Ilhan Omar, whose political base is the dispossessed.

Also of note is the fact that American blacks did not flock to Fateh in the least. The upper-left corner of the map is the region in which I live, and it is about 60% black with some asians thrown in. As you can see, Fateh, despite being black, did not appeal in the least. Frey's campaign was active here, and Fateh's was not. Perhaps some of that is because the black community is older here, or perhaps it's that blacks don't see Somalis as similar to themselves.

Skin color was not an attractor for Fateh here, that's for sure. People in my neighborhood voted for the white Jewish guy over the black Muslim Somali.

Whatever the reason, Mamdani still seems "American" to people and unthreatening. His upbeat socialism appealed, while Fateh's angry version of socialism seemed very third-world.

Fateh's loss, even though it was not by a huge margin, is a sign that the march to socialism is not inevitable.

: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
