If James Talarico Wins, I Am Moving to Canada!

Well, no. I will petition that Ed be banished to Canada as punishment for allowing it to happen in his adopted state.

I'm not a huge fan of the "big sort" that is happening in our country—the trend of conservatives moving to Red states and liberals...actually, liberals are often moving to Red states too, which is a different problem.

In a better world, we could argue out our differences, but the fact is that living surrounded by liberals is becoming intolerable, so I expect to follow the trend sometime and move to friendlier territory.

Texas is high on the list for me, which is why I am following the Texas Senate race more closely than I normally would.

There is a lot of talk that Ken Paxton's massive victory over John Cornyn increased Democrats' chances of victory. I've even seen the race put into the "Toss Up" category, which strikes me as a bit optimistic if you are a Democrat.

Even in a bad year for Republicans, Democrats have a steep hill to climb. And that hill is almost as steep as Pointe du Hoc with this guy in the race:

The selection of James Talarico, Graham Platner, and Abdul El-Sayed as Senate candidates tells you a lot of what you need to know about where the Democratic Party's ideological center is, or at least about how they think about the path to victory.

El-Sayad is a raging antisemite with Hamas sympathies, as is Platner, the Nazi Communist. They appeal to the revolutionary wing of the Democrats.

But for some reason, the Democrats in Texas don't long for "manly" (read disgusting and violent) men, perhaps because they live in a world of Republican cowboys oozing masculinity and loving meat. They long for weak, woke, and low-T candidates like Beto O'Rourke and James Talarico.

🚨James Talarico Just Declared War on Texas BBQ🚨

“I am proud to say that our campaign has officially become a non-meat campaign. We are only buying vegan products from our local vegan businesses.”

Bro… you do know you’re in TEXAS, right?

The state that runs on brisket, ribs, smoked sausage, and Friday night steak dinners.

You didn’t just go vegan.

You went full California in the BBQ capital of the world.

Texans don’t send anti-meat activists to the Senate.

This race is over.

Talarico's problem is that he cannot cross that cultural threshold. Nobody expects a politician to be really just like them, whatever they say. But they do expect them to live in the same universe, and to have a grasp of what they are supposed to speak up for.

Ed has it completely right when he says that Democrats are chasing an impossible dream in Texas, just as they did with Beta O'Rourke.
