The Democratic Party has two main factions right now, which can conveniently be described as the Organized Crime Democrats, who view the government as primarily a vehicle to distribute resources and power to friends, allies, and clients who can be counted on to return their largesse with reliable votes, and the Bolsheviks, who want to do all those things as well, but whose overriding goal is the destruction of the United States and Western Civilization and replace it with Third World communism.
For decades, at least, the Organized Crime Democrats have dominated the party, but they have tolerated and even fostered the growth of the Bolsheviks with the mistaken belief that no group of clients can ever be more reliable than those who could not in a million years vote for the Republicans.
Scott Wiener complains it is no longer safe for him to walk down the street after his own constituents accused him of being a traitor who has Israeli handlers.

They have lavished public schools and universities with almost unlimited money, funded the explosion of the leftist NGO complex that now comprises 10% of the workforce in America, and kowtowed to the nuttiest leftists in the world, cultivating radicalism under the belief that they would be a fringe political force, but a convenient Brownshirt army to intimidate Republicans and corporations into submission.

It seemed a good bet. Corporations in particular were happy to pay off activists to keep them off their backs, and hired useless or even damaging DEI coordinators to placate the left. Republicans cringed at being called nasty names, and even mouthed nostrums like "diversity is our strength" to prove they weren't racist monsters.
This was a very profitable operation for all concerned, at least until a growing populist revolt pushed back, and with Trump II, the fraud machine took a massive hit, defunding much of the OCD infrastructure.
The Democratic Party’s response to DSA winning elections is not to reconsider its approach and do more to deliver for working people but to do a red scare and float procedural maneuvers to prevent Democratic Party voters from being able to vote for DSA candidates.

The OCDs' alliance with and fostering of the radical left has come back to bite them in the nether regions now. As their resources have become constrained, the Bolsheviks have become ever more powerful, and as is always the case, the revolutionaries despise their allies as much as their ideological opponents, and now feel ready to take them out.
And, so far, their putsch is working, and the OCDs are rightfully frightened.
They are doing protectionism for their high-paid consultants, their stock portfolios, and various members of the Epstein class (their class).

Much of the political machine the Democrats have built in recent years has been based on funding radical NGOs with "community organizers" who mobilize a dedicated group of followers to go out and vote, protest, intimidate, and commit fraud. This seemed brilliant until that machine was turned against them, as it is right now.

The NGOs were supposed to be the clients, but in Deep Blue areas they are the stronger power in the Democratic Party, and they are working to turn the Democrats into the Democratic Socialists of America, which is a communist party with deep foreign ties and a committed cadre who believe now is their moment.

Zohran Mamdani is, for all intents and purposes, the Godfather of the DSA right now and is systematically taking out OCDs in strategic races. He just defeated two of the most powerful Democrats in the House of Representatives and personally intervened to protect Hakeem Jeffries, ensuring that he "owns" the leader of the Democrats in the House of Representatives and, as such, perhaps the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
And he did it by replacing Goldman and Espaillat with actual communists.

Mamdani has acolytes running in offices around the country, and surrogates like Hasan Piker are out on the campaign trail with Democrats. He's got candidates running for the Senate, and it seems like the Obama machine is collaborating, although their chosen leader of the Democrats is AOC.

The OCDs are quite rightly freaked out and starting the fight back, but it's not at all clear that they have the right weapons to do so. Especially since they have been stoking the very anger and subsidizing the ideology's growth in younger activist voters.

It's difficult to overstate the fear that the OCDs have for the radical takeover of their party, both because it could cost them seats or the presidency in 2028, but also because the Bolsheviks, while they have benefited mightily from the grifts, are not so committed to many of the most profitable ones for the OCDs.

One of the keys to the Bolsheviks' success is that they focus almost all their efforts on primaries, where few voters can have an outsized impact. This generation is very savvy, partly because they have tapped into the experience and money embedded in the Singham/CCP organization, along with the Soros folks, and partly because they are no longer a fringe group whose main sport was fighting among themselves.
This is the product of the "Long March Through the Institutions." They understand the system in a way that 60s radicals didn't.

The Bolsheviks speak the language of the "educated classes," and make appeals that stroke the egos and "empathy" of the suburban Democrats who have no idea what working-class people actually want or need out of politics.

They don't want worker collectives, green energy, and a flood of Haitian and Muslim immigrants, and they certainly are not on board with the radical alphabet issues that motivate the left.
And Israel is not the #1 issue for them.

The Bolsheviks appeal, at least in the guise of oh-so-pretty and smooth Mamdani, to the AWFLs. But they also repel a still-potent wing of the Democratic Party: the older-line liberals who until recently refused to see the radical left turn taking place.
Now, it's impossible to deny.

These are the Pete Buttigieg voters, who make up 25-30% of the party. They aren't part of the grift, took the OCDs' rhetoric at face value, and have convinced themselves that the Alphabet people are fringe, the antisemites are not as powerful as they are, and that they have their hearts in the right place. They are convinced that MAGA is filled with racist boobs, and cringe at the idea of voting for a Republican.

But they can no longer deny the radicalism. At least some of them will defect to a Vance or Rubio candidacy.
None of this guarantees a Republican future. If we enter a serious recession or depression, all bets are off, and it always takes longer than you would expect for people to change their habits.
But the Democrat civil war will accelerate the process, as the OCDs turn their fire on the Bolsheviks in self defense.
