Ann Widdecombe has been a towering figure in British politics for decades, first as a prominent member of the Conservative Party, and recently as the Spokeswoman for Nigel Farage's Reform Party.
While she is unfamiliar to most Americans, she most certainly is not in her home country. She has been at the center of debates on the most explosive issues in politics, most recently on the massive wave of migrants and on transgender issues. She is beloved by conservative activists, and hated by the Left.
She was murdered last week, and within hours the Devon and Cornwall police had a very good idea of who committed the murder because he was captured on video near the scene.
As you would expect in the UK, the police were laser-focused on...making sure nobody thought ill of the left or of migrants. They emphasized the race of the suspect because he was white, and for days insisted that there was no reason to believe that politics had a thing to do with the murder.

Meanwhile Farage and Reform have spent the weekend wildly speculating about Ann Widdecombe’s murder.

That was, of course, a lie. They weren't mistaken. They lied. This was obviously a planned murder, and they had evidence early on that the motive was political.

The obsession the police had with downplaying the crime distorted the handling of the case so much that the Home Secretary herself, well aware of how high-profile the case was, tore the case away from the local police and handed it to the Terrorism Squad. It took them no time at all to arrest the suspect, and guess what?
He's a communist radical who traveled hundreds of miles specifically to kill Widdecombe because of her political beliefs.
Devon and Cornwall Police is under fire for its handling of the Ann Widdecombe murder case after it was declared a terrorist investigation.
The force had repeatedly insisted there was nothing to suggest the crime had been politically motivated or linked to terrorism in a series of public statements issued following the news of her death on Friday.
But on Monday lunchtime, the head of UK counter-terrorism policing announced it had taken over the investigation following the discovery of “new information or evidence”.
A 28-year-old white British man from Rotherham in South Yorkshire, who was arrested on Saturday evening on suspicion of murder, was rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.
The establishment in the UK is frightened to death by the rise of Reform, and in addition to the loud celebrations of the activists on the left, Labour politicians have accused Reform of taking advantage of her murder to push a false narrative that Widdecombe was targeted for her political activity.
It was a conspiracy theory! Look at what the police said!
Political opponents had accused Reform of using Miss Widdecombe’s death as propaganda and said the party was scaremongering.
Richard Tice, the Reform UK deputy leader, demanded an apology for those accusations on Monday after it emerged the investigation was now being treated as terror-related.
Zia Yusuf, Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman, also criticised the police for asking people not to speculate on the crime’s motive, saying such calls meant “shut up and accept the establishment narrative”.
Gawain Towler, a Reform UK board member, said: “In a time when trust in the police is at an all-time low, this just plays into that they are trying to massage public opinion rather than do the job of investigating a brutal murder.
“By appearing to rule something out and then a few days later bringing it back in, they look manipulative and that’s a shame.”
This is all part of the pattern that keeps showing up in British policing: managing the Narrative™ instead of doing their jobs.

Their job is to enforce the law, not engage in social justice activism or run cover for the left and Islamists. At least that is what people think it is supposed to be.
Police are still saying that it's possible that there was some motive other than politics, but it beggars belief that a communist would travel 270 miles to kill some random woman who just happened to be a prominent conservative politician.
These types of things happen all the time now in the UK. White people get beaten up by migrants, and the police arrest the white person. Henry Nowak gets stabbed, and the police arrest him because his murderer accused him of racism. Migrants commit crimes, and the police try to bury the evidence of who committed the crime.
It's insane.
