My readers are well aware of how off the rails and illiberal European countries have become, but unfortunately, the average person in the United States, and many in Europe, are not.
Even more unfortunately, many of those who are aware strongly favor the European model, where the state and cultural elite control the narrative.
Liberalism has always had less purchase in Europe than in the United States; we had the advantage of making a clean break from the baggage of authoritarian history and norms, while Europe, even in countries that tried, could never fully embrace classical liberalism; they always backslid into old habits.

I've spent a lot of time on this issue because Europe previews where our own political and cultural elites hope to take our country. Just because liberalism took root here doesn't mean it is secure. Even a tree with deep roots can be blown over in a strong enough wind. And the winds are getting pretty strong.
Macron's endorsement of restricting speech to conform to the elite's preferences isn't surprising, though it is a clearer restatement of a principle embedded in European regulations, but rarely stated so bluntly.
You will notice its similarity to the campus ethic: speech is violence; the authorities decide what can be said; "nonsense," as defined by the state in the form of national governments or the European Union, must be suppressed. The government acts quickly to shut people up.
Already, the European Union is imposing fines on social media companies for publishing unapproved speech, slapping a nine-figure fine on X, which is now under review. Other social media outlets have just crumbled, allowing European bureaucrats to decide what Americans can say or Europeans can read.

This is, of course, totalitarian, as are the arrests for social media posts, which are now common, and raids on citizens to take away their electronics.
Some of this stems from the arrogance and ideology of the transnational elites, and some from the simple desire to maintain power as the citizenry turns its back on the governing elites. They hope that hiding dissent and making it outside the Overton Window will save them.
We'll have to see about that.
All this is just a preview of what will happen if the Democrats regain power and control the presidency, the House, and the Senate. Especially if they pack the courts.
So if you feel the need to punish your Republican representatives for their inability to get everything done, be aware that doing so may cost you more than you want to pay. You aren't just taking away their jobs; you are handing power to your enemies.
