One of the things that drives me nuts about how liberals think is that not only do they believe that government can solve all problems, but that even the local city councilor or mayor is just as well positioned to solve any problem as the President of the United States.
Perhaps some conservatives live under the same misapprehension, but I doubt the number is large. After all, one of the key pillars of conservatism is that government is pretty bad at solving even the problems that are normally understood to be in its wheelhouse, so expecting it to solve ancillary problems is a lost cause.
City leaders try to solve the world's problems all the time. Back in the 80s, cities around the country declared themselves "nuclear-free zones" in protest of Reagan's desire to nuke the world. I liked to joke every time I drove into Amherst, where my parents lived, that they would survive the apocalypse because Russia now knew not to nuke them.
Sanctuary cities are all about rewriting immigration policies, and city councils and mayors like to make foreign policy statements all the time.
Mayor Mamdani is quite active in his determination to save the world as he sees fit, and now, in addition to pushing his own immigration and foreign policies, he has decided to solve the gender dysphoria problem on his own.
🚨Under Mamdani's leadership, NYC plans to spend $8.9 million on contracts to fund trans procedures for minors. “This includes the prescription and administration of puberty-blockers and hormone replacement therapy to all minor patients....” the procurement notice says. The two potential vendors the city will negotiate with are Callen-Lorde and the Nonprofit Organization for Philanthropic Initiatives. Callen-Lorde has a “confidential program designed specifically to meet the medical and mental health needs of LGBTQ+ adolescents and young adults ages 13-24.” The clinic has advocated to “fully decriminalize sex work,” and it offers “free healthcare program for sex workers in an affirming, supportive environment.” NOPI sponsors an organization called RESPCT, which “exists to ensure that transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse people—especially those under 18—retain uninterrupted access to safe, evidence-based gender-affirming care regardless of political, financial, or institutional barriers.” @DailySignal https://t.co/qTjCgGdlyY

It's no surprise to any of you that I emphatically oppose alphabet ideology, and believe that gender transition for minors amounts to a human rights violation, and doctors who practice this are creating iatrogenic harm to their patients.
But even if that weren't true, I would still think that Mamdani's virtue signaling here would be insane. It's not a mayor's role to intervene in children's healthcare beyond setting public health regulations specific to city services, such as New York City's schools, which the city runs.
If New York City had this kind of money sitting around (which it doesn't), there are a lot better ways to spend that money than transitioning kids from one gender to another, or trying to. Mayors are not doctors, psychologists, or babysitters. They shouldn't try to run grocery stores.
They should focus on what the city is supposed to take care of: pipes, pavement, and police. Those are the core functions of city governments, and by all accounts, the city is not doing that great a job of any of its core functions.
Admittedly, New York City is not Seattle, Portland, or Chicago, which are at or approaching the point of being lost causes for a generation. Those cities have not just taken their eye off the ball; they seem to be in a ketamine haze, staring at psychedelic paintings with sitar music playing in the background.
Mamdani's focus on everything besides the core function of government is nothing benign. He likes to focus on the divisive and sexy issues that get people riled up, while a mayor should focus on the boring issues where failure makes life unendurable, but that, when functioning, is barely noticeable.
You may not be able to make a moving TikTok video about the value of pothole-free streets, but a mayor's job is to make functioning city services almost invisible as people go about their daily lives. No crime in the subway isn't news. No potholes make the streets go unnoticed. Avoiding Water main breaks never makes the news. Mayors should be measured by how little you have to complain about.
Mamdani is a showman, like so many mayors and government officials. But government at its best should be silently competent, and only gain attention when it fixes some unexpected problem quickly and efficiently, as Ron DeSantis does in Florida.
Mamdani, though, wants to be a social justice mayor and a celebrity, which is exactly the wrong thing in a government official. He will revel in the controversy, glow from the applause and kudos he gets for his compassionate ruining of children's lives, and no doubt make TikToks with drag kids as they dance for adults lusting after them and throwing dollar bills.
Wanting kudos is not a liberal politician's disease; it is a politician's disease. But liberals have such a wider scope in which to ruin things. Rather than just wasting money on stupid projects, they also feel competent to solve every problem in the world.
Why not make New York City net zero to save the earth? No doubt the city alone could bring down temps by 4 degrees Celsius with windmills on top of the Empire State Building and Gracie Mansion!
Pipes, pavement, and police. And rats. Get rid of the rats. Once you get far beyond that, you are likely off track.
