Mamdani Doesn't Hate Jews Enough for His Supporters...

The Revolution always, always, ALWAYS eats its own.

Ask Robespierre. Ask Trotsky.

Ask...Zohran Mamdani.

Yes, THAT Zohran Mamdani, as if anybody else could have such an unusual name. The mayor who got elected largely based on his appeals to the radical communist antisemitic crowd is now considered Zionist-adjacent.

Mamdani spends an awful lot of time hating on Jews, and even when he makes a rather lame tweet admitting that Hamas went a bit too far on October 7th, 2023, he had to spend 2/3 of his X post condemning the State of Israel. His wife is openly and proudly a Jew-hater, and Mamdani's anti-Israel outbursts come so often that it could qualify as a tic.

None of that matters to the revolutionaries, whose goal is the complete destruction of all that is right and good in the world. They firmly believe that civilization itself must be brought to ruin, the debris of which they can use to rebuild a utopia.

This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.

The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.

Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.

To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity.

Well, maybe not even that. I doubt they think that far ahead. They just want to tear it all down, and Mamdani hasn't done so yet. He hasn't even firebombed a synagogue or anything.

So, in their eyes, he has betrayed them. Or at least that is what they are shouting in the streets.

As mayor and a rising star in the Democrat Party, Mamdani loves to perform for this crowd and use its energy to propel his rise to the top, but now that he is mayor, he has his eye on building a power base to take his message national. For all his ideological zeal, it's clear his first priority is promoting Zohran Mamdani, and that requires balancing his ideological commitments with enough realism not to ruin his shot at whatever national goal he wants to reach.

He can't be president, but a Senate seat is likely in his future.

Mamdani has cultivated an image that combines a commitment to "social justice" with an unusual likeability for a radical leftist. He seems to get along well enough with Trump, even if he probably hates him with a passion. His affect is attractive to most people, and if you turn off the sound when he speaks as mayor, he seems unthreatening. He's affable enough, as long as you don't listen to what he says, and even when he is hateful in his words, his affect projects likability.

Those are characteristics which serve him well, except with his ideological base, which demands not just, or even primarily, policies they like, but raw hatred. These are people who prefer Luigi Mangione to Susan Collins or Pete Buttigieg, and who would love to march alongside Graham Platner if they could.

They are the people who mime Charlie Kirk getting shot. They don't go for smiley faces.

Mamdani is a far better politician than one would have expected when he appeared on the scene. You and I see through his mask because we are primed to, but for the average person, that mask is as convincing as any that Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible would wear.

So the break with the radical left was inevitable, because no rising politician can please this crowd. His practical concerns are not what they should be — governing the city well — but they exist nonetheless. He has a career to promote, and he's not going to ruin his chances for rising higher by being as incompetent as Brandon Johnson or as vile a hater (in public) as any of these Antifa goons.

RIGHT NOW: Zohran Mamdani stands on the Israeli side of an October 7 vigil while Palestinian organizers and supporters of Palestinian liberation directly protest him.

Another politician at the vigil is Brad Lander, who increased NYC pension holdings in Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, as their weapons were used to annihilate Palestinians at the height of the Gaza genocide.

Meanwhile, students across NYC are walking out of classrooms demanding an end to the city’s complicity in Israel’s genocide of Palestinians.

Mamdani campaigned on solidarity with Palestine. Now the movement is confronting him over the gap between that solidarity and his political decisions. This is not a hypothetical contradiction or a disagreement over rhetoric. It is a confrontation over where political power is being exercised, whose demands are being accommodated, and whose are being dismissed.

Solidarity is measured by what you do with power, not what you say to obtain it.

The truth is, the pro-Palestine movement is genocidal, and literally nothing short of making Israel Judenrein will satisfy them, and even that will only whet their appetite for more destruction. Mamdani, even if he wants to, can't give them what they want, and thus he would always be a disappointment to them.

But in one way, the protesters do have a point: when he is forced to choose between his ideological commitments and continuing his rise to power, he chooses the latter.

I don't doubt that his ideological commitment is to communism and a soft revolution — to the "Long March Through the Institutions"—but I also am sure that he has no desire to be on the front lines getting shot at.

His ground troops have clearly figured that out and are punishing him for that.
