She Wiped the Floor With Letitia James, but Will It Matter?

Letitia James is a corrupt, incompetent hack, and she's not very bright. She's mean, cares nothing about the law, and has demonstrably broken laws she prosecuted others for.

Other than that, she's a fine Attorney General. If you ranked state AGs from worst to best, with worst at the top, Letitia would own the top slot.

This year, James faces an excellent Republican candidate, Saritha Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor with an impressive record. She has about 50 IQ points on James, whose great skill is spewing bile while wearing a feral grin. If she ever faced a hostile press in her state — one that pinned her down rather than simply amplify her carefully prepared talking points and nod sympathetically as she spews emotional nonsense — James would have been replaced by a more competent Democrat, of which there are plenty in New York.

James' skill is attacking Republicans and manipulating the emotions of people motivated primarily by anger, and she is admittedly pretty good at it when she is primed and ready. If destroying Republicans, especially Donald Trump, is your #1 priority, then Letitia is your gal. Not that she is particularly good at even that, but the point is venting rage, so it works.

James and Komatireddy debated, and their differences couldn't have been starker. James does well enough on camera when she has a prepared pitch about how evil the Republicans are; she satisfies her audience the way Steven Seagal fans seem satisfied by his execrable movies. People keep watching for some reason, so I guess it works.

But when put up against Komatireddy, James looks like Seagal versus Tom Cruise. Not in the same class, or even close.

James' reign as Attorney General has been characterized by little more than political grandstanding. Fraud has skyrocketed; crime has surged. None of the A.G.'s basic tasks have been done, but you can be sure headlines have been made.

Letitia James's election and reelection show that too much of politics is about performing for the cameras and too little about doing the job. So many people want to let their Id run free and use power to harm their enemies that they have forgotten government officials are there to do the job. Or should be, at least.

James' record is demonstrably bad, but if you had to place a bet on who will win this race, you'd be nuts to say "Komatireddy."

It's all politics, all the time. When things run smoothly, and the trains run on time, that's to be expected. Politics, after all, is a spectator sport for many people, and as long as things are going well otherwise, you expect personality and performance to dominate.

But we are living in the age of bread and circuses, and the platform of Democrats really amounts to just that. More welfare, more gladiatorial slaughtering of conservatives or whoever is the target of the two-minute hate these days.

I would be thrilled to be proven wrong and see Komatireddy squeak into the office, and it is not technically impossible.

But Komatireddy is running what we call an "uphill race," a polite way of saying an almost-lost, but not quite, cause. She's down 13 points in the polls, less than a month out.

Miracles do happen, but they call them miracles for a reason.

Editor’s Note: Republicans are fighting for election integrity by requiring proper identification to vote. It's common sense, yet Democrats are spreading lies about the impact of such a measure.
