The attack happened in the city of Manchester on Yom Kippur. The attacker drove a vehicle into a group of people outside a synagogue and then got out and killed a security guard with a knife. Two people were killed and three others were injured. The attacker was trying to get inside to kill more people when he was killed by police.
The savage attack unfolded outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester just after 9:30 a.m. as scores of people were worshipping inside, police said.
Cops descended on the scene after a witness reported seeing a car crashing into members of the public before a man was stabbed and left lying in a pool of blood outside the synagogue.
“The second he got out of the car, he started stabbing anyone near him. He went for the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue,” one eyewitness told the Sun.
“The guy had a knife, and he was just stabbing the window trying to get in,” another onlooker said.

There's video from the scene which is pretty gruesome. As this starts the attacker is on the ground but still moving. Bystanders think he has a bomb around his waist and police are shouting at bystanders to get back. The camera pans down to show a man lying in the street in a pool of blood. The attacker tries to get up at which point police shoot him again.

Authorities are treating this as terrorism, which it obviously is. Two other people have been arrested, but it's not clear who they are yet.
Laurence Taylor, the head of counterterrorism policing in the U.K., said that the police believe they know the identity of the assailant but had not been able to formally confirm it.
“U.K. policing is mobilizing, and it’s mobilizing fast,” Mr. Taylor said at a news conference. “Police forces are stepping up patrols across the country at synagogues and Jewish sites and more widely to provide reassurance to all those communities who have been affected.”
Mr. Taylor said that the attacker had been shot and killed by the police and that because of “suspicious items on his person,” a bomb squad had been called to the scene. He also said that they had arrested two people in connection with the assault.
A member of this synagogue says there were two paid security guards and two volunteers at the gate. He adds that Jews in the UK have been fearing this day would come for the past two years as they see the streets filled with marches directed at Israel almost every week.

The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.

Meanwhile, it's fair to say not all of the media has been covering itself in glory as this attack unfolded. This reporter referred to the Synagogue where this attack happened as a Mosque (twice). (Thanks to David for sending me this.) At least the graphics on the screen are correct.

Early on the BBC was also speculating that maybe the attacker was right-wing.

The Daily Mail is reporting the two people arrested lived in a home just 1,500 feet away from the synagogue.

A man who lives in the street claimed he saw two men in handcuffs being led away by police.
The identity of the killer still hasn't been released and police haven't identified the two men arrested at the house or even said why they were arrested. I'll update below if the ID is released.
