Sweden Cures 'Islamophobia'

There are two ways to make an argument

Actually, there are many, but work with me here.

The first way involves mastering and marshalling the facts, and building a logical argument that is designed to reason with the reasonable and convince the convinceable.

The second is to call the opposing argument "insane" - to label it as a mental illness.   One can't argue with the irrational, indeed with the mentally ill, can one?  That's the definition of insanity, isn't it?  It's a lot easier to dismiss one's opponent as insane and not worthy of a rational argument than it is to actually build a logical argument that convinces people.

You oppose same sex marriage, not because of beliefs about the purpose of the family, nosirreebob.  You're "homophobic".

Oppose letting frustrated stage moms with Munchausens by Proxy have their kids' genitals chopped off before they're of age to really know what they're doing?   You're "transphobic".

And of course, if you want to go slow with unrestricted immigration of low-skilled, hard-to-assimilate people from unstable countries, who may or may not, now or ever, really believe in what America stands for but sure do love those financial incentives?

Islamophobia.

Wrapping social debates in junk psychology is one of the oldest, cheapest tricks in the book.

And at least one nation has had enough of it for now.  Sweden is retiring the term from public discourse:

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said on Friday that her government will no longer use the term ‘Islamophobia,’ describing the concept as “problematic”—not least because it “brings to mind the irrational fears of individuals.”...Malmer Stenergard last week told [Swedish] parliamentarians that “we are pushing for the term ‘Islamophobia’ to be replaced with what is called ‘anti-Muslim racism’ or ‘anti-Muslim hatred’ in English”—that is, across international institutions. Officials will gather in Brussels in part to discuss this in the third week of May.

As we've noted in this space in the past, Sweden has had a big problem with immigrants from the Middle East not only having trouble assimilating, but bringing their squabbles to Sweden.  This contrasts with Denmark - in one case mere miles away - which puts a premium on making sure immigrants are assimilable to Danish society.

The term "Islamophobia" is a broad-headed rhetorical axe: it's used not only to attack non-Muslims who push back against the ravages of unrestricted immigration, but against Muslims who advocate for assimilation:

Her speech on the scrapping of the term followed a parliamentary question submitted by Sweden Democrats MP Richard Jomshof. He criticised politicians and journalists for having “chosen to swallow the Islamist bait, “adding that “the term is also used to attack liberal Muslims who, for example, fight for women’s rights and seek democratic reforms.”

It's drawing a reaction:

Pullquote:

The concept of “Islamophobia” was deliberately designed to equate legitimate criticism of Islamic doctrine with racism. It was weaponized to shut down discussion about core Islamic texts containing commands to wage war, rape, and subjugate non-Muslims.Sweden just recognized what millions of Europeans already know: criticizing a religion that openly calls for the murder and sexual enslavement of non-believers is not a phobia, but basic common sense and self-preservation.

After we knock this out, we need to go after all those other fake diagnoses.
