Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.
Does anyone remember the film PCU? Christian and Ed do, mainly with some fondness, albeit with a sense that the movie chickened out on the true source of political correctness. That bothers both of us about the new HBO Max series Rooster with Steve Carrell. The series offers no stakes at all, and even while ocassionally skewering political correctness, everything seems to be a contrived cheat.
No one can accuse Nicole Kidman of avoiding consequences, though. The A-list celebrity spoke this week about her desire to become a "death doula," which may prompt some quips but should instead inspire people to follow her example. At least she's still working; the same cannot be said for John Waters or John Sayles, two legendary indie filmmakers who can't get commitments for even low-budget projects. We lament the refusal of Hollywood to return to the 1970s model of independent filmmaking at modest budgets, and then discuss how Steven Soderbergh is embracing AI to complete his documentary on John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
