No, I am not referring to the Eastern European countries that were once held forcefully by the Soviet Union behind the Iron Curtain.
I am talking about the European Union in the 2020s.

You may not recall that George Orwell's 1984 was not a warning about Communism in the Soviet Union. The setting was not Moscow, or East Berlin, or any city held by the Soviets during the Cold War.
It was England. Ingsoc, the reigning ideology, was short for English Socialism and Oceana included the Anglosphere and South America. Europe, in 1984, was controlled by what amounted to the Soviet Bloc.
Orwell got it a bit wrong in his "prediction." The EU is part of Oceana today, and the US is only flirting with socialism. There's still a streak of individualism and commitment to Liberty in the ol' girl yet.
But Europe is dead, aside from, ironically, the Eastern European countries that were oppressed behind the Iron Curtain. They learned their lesson from hard experience. The UK and the EU are, unfortunately, rushing down the road to totalitarianism.
The irony of Ursula von der Leyen's pretend defense of free speech is so obvious, but only people outside of Europe or with the inclination to read non-European media would know it. In the censored states of the EU, most people might think that Ursula's words to the protester meant that he would not be arrested and charged for his outburst.
Wrong. He was dragged away and charged. So when she said "Moscow," she also meant "right here in Europe." The only difference is that totalitarianism is soft in the West, and more brutal in places like Moscow and China, where people are disappeared or fall out of windows.
Of course, of the two versions of totalitarianism, the softer is better than the harder. In both places, your spirit is broken, but the croissants are better in the West. Sure, these countries are being invaded, and crimes are skyrocketing, but the food is still good.
The current generation may be the last of the Europeans. After two millennia, Western culture may finally be extinguished in Europe. The re-reconquista is well on its way to replace Christian Europe with Islamism, only this time it is the European elites who have invited the invaders in.
The censorship state is but one tool that is used to facilitate this cultural replacement. Most of the censorship is aimed at suppressing dissent over the flood of migrants that began under the policies of Angela Merkel, and has since dominated European policy.
Davos, as far as I know, has no migrant camps or grooming gang problems, so everything remains A-OK for the transnational elite.
That won't be true forever, though. The late Roman Empire faced similar challenges; a flood of Germanic migrants contributed significantly to its decline. During this period, German migrants came to dominate the legions, as Roman elites ceded the responsibility of running the empire to the migrants.
In other words, there is precedent, and it doesn't have a happy ending.
It's hard to see how this trend reverses itself. Europe is Islamizing, and the reaction of the elites is to strike out at ordinary citizens who are objecting. It is difficult to overstate how much disdain the transnational elite has for the citizens of their countries--they don't even believe in countries at all.
So we helplessly bear witness to the destruction of a once-great culture, and can only shake our heads as leaders like von der Leyen brag that they support freedom as they imprison people just trying to speak up against the insanity.
