When I saw that E. Jean Carroll, the woman who accused Donald Trump of raping her, was being investigated, I didn't think much of it.
Sure, she pretty clearly lied, and the entire case was a total setup. Democrats love to believe the worst of Republicans and jump on any real or fantastical accusations of bad behavior by Republicans, so perhaps many of them believed her ridiculous story that was based on—I kid you not—copying the plot of an episode of Law and Order: SVU. But then again, Democrats swallowed the accusations against Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh...
But any objective person who looked into the case could tell it was a setup.
“I think most people think of rape as being sexy,” she told Cooper, according to a transcript of the interview, explaining that she instead thinks of her alleged attack as a “fight.”
Trump cited the interview in telling Kaplan that Carroll “loved” sexual assault.
“She actually indicated that she loved it. Okay?” Trump said in the deposition. “In fact, I think she said it was sexy, didn’t she? She said it was very sexy to be raped.”
Kaplan then asked: “So, sir, I just want to confirm: It’s your testimony that E. Jean Carroll said that she loved being sexually assaulted by you?”
And Trump answered: “Well, based on her interview with Anderson Cooper, I believe that’s what took place.”
Still, I assumed that the investigation was based on a stretch, until I read that the woman who admitted that she thought that rape is "sexy" committed provable perjury.
New York (of course) wrote an unconstitutional law just to “get Trump.” https://t.co/bW3JKgvnYy https://t.co/Ohz7WW5K7a

I didn't know that, partly because the case was so transparently a political hit job, and I didn't bother spending much time investigating the case or Carroll. While I knew the case was a hoax, I suspected that it would have much less political impact than the Democrats supposed.
The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who accused President Donald Trump of sexual assault, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
The investigation is focused on whether Carroll committed perjury in testimony tied to her two civil lawsuits against the president – one alleging he sexually abused Carroll in a New York department store in the mid-1990s, and a second for defaming her when in 2019 he repeatedly denied the assault, said she wasn’t his type and claimed she made it up to boost sales of a book.
Prosecutors’ theory hinges on a 2022 deposition statement by Carroll, 82, that she received no outside funding for her lawsuit, though it was later revealed that billionaire Reid Hoffman had paid some legal fees and expenses.
I knew that in New York, Trump would lose no matter what. I also knew that fighting about the case with anybody would be pointless because the rules of evidence do not apply to Trump in the eyes of Democrats.
The situation is different now, because the shoe is on the other foot. Carroll may, in fact, be in trouble. (NSFW.)

She says her legal team wanted to recreate how she looked in the 90’s, all the way down to her hair, in order to create the impression she was an attractive enough person for Donald Trump to screw her.
I hope Trump takes EVERYTHING from her.

I still think that proving Carroll intentionally lied will be difficult, not because she isn't a fabulist and a liar, but because of the political conditions under which she did. Juries, especially in Blue areas, like people who attack Donald Trump, and have a history of rewarding people who make accusations against Donald Trump.
While Reid Hoffmann may or may not be inclined to finance her defense, because defending Carroll won't hurt Trump, she still should have no problem getting others to.
Carroll is a fruitcake. But she might also be a criminal.
As for the accusation of lawfare that has already been floated, the critics have a point. The DOJ doesn't tend to go after every case of perjury.
But when you have a case where a new law was crafted specifically to destroy a presidential candidate—essentially creating something akin to a Bill of Attainder—there is a case to be made that special attention should be paid.
And, besides, turnabout is fair play.
