Violence aimed at ICE facilities continues to ramp up, this time in Dallas, Texas. According to early reports, a sniper wounded at least three people before killing himself as police approached.
The local ABC affiliate covered the shooting shortly after it happened:
CNN then picked up the story with a few more details:
At least three people were injured in a shooting at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Dallas on Wednesday morning, according to ICE acting Director Todd Lyons.
“Preliminary information is a possible sniper,” Lyons said. “We have three individuals that are down at this time. We’re not sure on their condition. They’ve been taken to the hospital.”
The local NBC affiliate reports that the perp killed himself, although police are still looking for any other potential shooters:
An active shooter situation at a Dallas ICE facility on Wednesday morning left multiple people shot, with some in critical condition.
According to police sources on the scene, three people were shot and multiple are in critical condition. The suspect, armed with a rifle, was a sniper on a roof who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head as agents approached.
As of now, there is no information about the perp or the victims. It's not clear if the victims are ICE employees or detainees, or both. The local Fox station indicates that there may be a higher casualty count coming, with potentially multiple fatalities. Their live stream is ongoing and embedded below, but as always, be careful with early reports. Most of them turn out to be either in error or miscommunicated.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has issued a statement:
There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas @ICEgov Field Office. Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities.

The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE…
While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them. It must stop.
Please pray for the victims and their families.
We'll update as developments warrant, but it may be a while before we get firm details.
Update: No new details yet (9:32 am ET), but the Associated Press reminds us of the context:
A July 4 attack at a Texas immigration detention center injured a police officer, who was shot in the neck. Attackers dressed in black military-style clothing opened fire outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, federal prosecutors said. At least 11 people have been charged in connection with the attack.
A man with an assault rifle fired dozens of rounds at federal agents as they were leaving a U.S. Border Patrol facility in McAllen on July 7. The man, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, injured a police officer who responded to the scene before authorities shot and killed him. Police later found other weaponry, ammunition and backpacks inside his car.
Let's not forget how House Democrats, led by LaMonica McIver, set the tone for violence at ICE facilities.
Update: Homeland Security says that none of their officers got wounded in this shooting, but they can't speak to local law enforcement. Still no word on fatalities other than the perp, and the casualty count thus far is still three wounded.
Update: Two of the three victims have died:
Two of the three people shot at a Dallas ICE field office this morning are dead, an ICE spokesperson said. The third person is in the hospital.
The three people shot do not include the shooter, who is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
All three people shot were detainees at the facility, and no ICE agents were shot or hurt.
If the shooter targeted detainees, that may put a different twist on the motive -- assuming the perp knew they were detainees.
Update: The police and DHS will update everyone shortly:
No information has yet been released about the shooter. Perhaps we'll find out more at the presser.
Update: I've been watching and listening to the presser, and there wasn't much added to public knowledge (see next update). Ted Cruz made a passionate plea to dial down the rhetoric generally and especially in regard to ICE. It's still not clear what the motive was for the shooting, however, or whether the perp targeted detainees specifically or just wanted to shoot at the facility indiscriminately.
Update: I missed an important point in the presser, but my friend Julio Rosas captured it:
Dallas FBI special agent in charge on ICE facility shooting in Dallas: "We’ve seen from rounds that were found near the suspected shooter contain messages that are anti-ICE in nature." pic.twitter.com/iFi1HIXcJ2

So the perp wasn't targeting detainees but the facility generally, one presumes. That does seem to indicate that Cruz had good reason to get angry at the mic today.
